STACKS, EXPLAINED

AAS neuroprotection

Compounds discussed for cognitive stability in the context of anabolic steroid use.

The idea

Long-term supraphysiological androgen use is associated in human literature with poorer visuospatial and executive performance, and animal work points at oxidative stress, altered glutamate handling, and apoptotic signaling. This roster aims at those mechanisms — not at cognition in general, and not at making steroid use safe. The distinction matters: a stack aimed at reducing collateral damage is not a license.

What's in it

CompoundRole in this stackEvidence
MemantineLow-affinity NMDA antagonist; damps excessive glutamate signaling without blocking normal transmission.Approved drug (Alzheimer's); this use investigational
J-147Binds mitochondrial ATP synthase; drives AMPK/mTOR longevity signaling and neurotrophic support.Investigational; no published human data
DonepezilAcetylcholinesterase inhibitor; raises acetylcholine signaling.Approved drug (Alzheimer's); prescription-only
R-Alpha Lipoic AcidFeeds the respiratory chain and regenerates spent antioxidants.Supplement; mixed clinical evidence
NACETRaises intracellular glutathione in places plain NAC largely does not reach.Investigational
Carnosic AcidActivates Nrf2, switching on the cell's own antioxidant genes rather than supplying one from outside.Preclinical

Overlap & conflict

Two shared levers: the acetylcholinesterase target is touched by memantine, J-147, and donepezil, and the sigma-1 receptor by memantine and donepezil. A shared lever is not automatically a problem — it is a question about whether the second item buys anything the first has not already bought. No adverse pair interactions were flagged at the class level on the source page.

What we don't know

There is no human evidence for this combination, or for any of these compounds, for this purpose. Whether anything here measurably protects cognition during steroid use is unknown, and the stack's own framing admits it is not treatment for anything.

Reality check

Donepezil is the member that most deserves a doctor conversation, not a search engine: nausea, vivid dreams, and bradycardia are its common cholinergic effects, and it interacts with anything else acting on acetylcholine. And nothing here touches the cardiovascular or endocrine risks of the anabolics themselves — those are untouched by every item on this page.

Stoic Cookie verdict

Mechanistically coherent as a discussion set, weak as a shield. The honest version of this page is mostly a warning label: interesting mechanisms, no human outcome data for the purpose, one prescription drug with real side effects, and zero change to the underlying risk profile of steroid use.
